1. SMPS stands for Switch Mode Power Supply.
2. It converts unregulated ac or dc input to the regulated dc output voltage.
3. Most computer chips in modern computers requires 1.2-3.3 volts.
4. But available ac voltage is 230 volts, by using SMPS to convert required level regulated voltage.
5. SMPSs are small weight and size and provide high effieciency.
6. The main disadvantage of switch mode power supply is to produce noise.
